Obituary for Charles Sumner Smart III
Mr. Charles Sumner Smart III, 73, of New London, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at Atrium Health Cabarrus, surrounded by his family.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Aaron Edwards. The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 pm prior to the service.
Charles was born on July 22, 1949 in Anderson, SC to the late Elizabeth Johns Sauvain Smart and Charles S. Smart, Jr.
He attended Concord High School and was a graduate of The Webb School and N.C. State University. Charles was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army ending his rank as Lieutenant Colonel. He worked in textile management for many years before retirement.
He was always the life of the party, a grill master, loved his family fishing trips, passing time with his dogs, and traveling to the mountains with his wife, Pam. To his six grandchildren, he was their beloved “Grouper.”
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Pam Kee Smart; children, Rocky James (Nicole), Laura Smart, Sandy Reynolds, Becky Eisbrenner (Chris), Raeann West (Aaron); sisters, Margaret “Ginger” Shoe, Martha “Mimi” Barlow (John); brother, James “Jim” Smart (Celia); grandchildren, Carter Reynolds, Emma James, Levi James, Hudson West, Ziva Nobles, Boone West; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
