Obituary for Donald James Faggart Sr.

Donald James Faggart, Sr., 88, of Concord, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, December 18, 2022.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at St. James Lutheran Church, officiated by Rev. Craig Saltzer. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.

He was born in Cabarrus County on January 22, 1934 to Harold Lee and Helen Cress Faggart. He grew up in the Rimertown Community. He attended Cline School and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1952. Later, he received his Associate's Degree from Biscayne Southern Business School.

After graduation, Don was drafted into the U. S. Army on December 6, 1956. He was assigned to the 547th Engineer Battalion at Ford Ord, California and later served in the 111th Signal Battalion at Fort Meade, Maryland. He was honorably discharged after serving 6 years.

Don worked in Cannon Mills, the Cabarrus County Tax Office, Western Electric and retired from AT&T.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council and Columbarium Committee.

He also served as a Building Supervisor, Usher, and for many years, was a valuable member of the Property Committee.
Don was a member of American Legion Post 51 in Concord for over 50 years, where he served as Chaplain and First Vice-Commander. He was also a member of Cabarrus Masonic Lodge #720.

Don enjoyed traveling with his family during their annual beach vacations in the summers. They didn't miss a year up until 2020 when his Alzheimer's diagnosis made traveling difficult. He also cherished his time with Sandra during their many trips with St. James Lutheran Church's Lively Leisures group.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra, his parents, two brothers, Frankie and Harold Faggart, and sister-in-law, Barbara Faggart. He is survived by his children, Donald James Faggart, Jr. and wife, Karen of Clayton, NC and Laura Faggart Overby and husband, Wendell of Concord. He is also survived by his precious grandchildren, Mason and Campbell Overby, and Emma Grace Faggart.

The family wishes to thank the Staff of St. Andrews Assisted Living Center in Concord for their love and compassionate care of Don during these past 21 months as his Alzheimer's progressed.
