Obituary

Mrs. Iris Jean Byrd Smith, of Concord, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Atrium Health Cabarrus.

A private family service was held Friday at Wilkinson Funeral Home by Rev. Jesse Watkins.

Jean was born December 17, 1931 in Union County to the late Sydney Marshall Byrd and Dorintha Baucom Byrd. She was also preceded in death by husbands Clarence W. Faust and Richard M. “Dick” Smith, brother James E. “Jim” Byrd, and grandson James M. “Michael” Ammons.

She is remembered by many for collecting students’ lunch money at W.R. Odell School’s cafeteria and then by her work at Belk (Carolina Mall) in the former Customer Service Department.

Jean is survived by daughters Deborah F. “Debbie” Ammons, Myra F. Pate and husband Jerry, and Maria F. Bostian and husband Jeff all of Concord; grandchildren Catherine P. Gulledge and husband David, Lindsey D. Ammons, and Ellen M. Pate; great grandchildren Addison M. Cagle, Anderson C. Cagle, and Fisher C. Gulledge.

The family would like to thank the Atrium Health Northeast ICU team of doctors and nurses for providing excellent care during Jean’s extended stay. They would also like to thank Ralph S. Christy, Jr., MD for a lifetime of friendship and support during this time.

In memory of her, the family encourages those who can, to support the Cabarrus, or local, Blessing Box program with non-perishable foods and personal care items.

Wilkinson Funeral Home assisted the Smith family. Online condolences may be submitted at wilkinsonfuneralhome.com.

I was so sorry to read about your mom. Jean was a special person. I had not seen her for several years but whenever we would run into each other out shopping she was always so sweet and kind. I know you will miss her as will all of her friends.
