Obituary

Mrs. Susanne Rummerfield Schafer, age 68, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 with her family by her side.

A visitation will be held Thursday, April 22 from 5 to 7 pm at Wilkinson Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 23 at 12:30 pm at St. James the Greater Catholic Church with Father Jerome Chavarria CSsR officiating. A committal service will be held Saturday, April 24 at 1:30 pm at St. James the Greater Catholic Church Cemetery.

Susanne was born September 27, 1952 in Easton, PA, a daughter of the late William Gerald Rummerfield and Olive Evelyn Chandlee Rummerfield. In her youth, she was a member of the Catholic Daughters. As a sixteen-year-old high school sophomore, Susanne met and fell in love with her soulmate and the love of her life, Keith. They dated and married in 1974, celebrating 47 years of happiness together; two adoring children were the result of their love.

Susanne’s professional career spanned 40 years as an elementary teacher. The first 20 years at St. Philip and St. James Elementary School in NJ. While there, she started the pre-k program. When her family moved to NC, she became a teaching librarian at R. Brown McAllister Elementary School. While at R. Brown, Susanne organized several programs such as Battle of the Books, Books for Babes, and The Young Authors. Susanne graduated from Salem College, West Virginia, and received her Master’s in Library Science from UNCG.

Susanne had a passion for learning and passing on her love of reading to all her students. Susanne enjoyed travel, tennis, long walks on the beach with Keith and their dog Beazy and attending Carolina Panther football games with her family. She was involved in the Silver Sneakers Program and was a member of St. James the Greater Catholic Church.

Those left to cherish Susanne’s memory are her loving husband, Keith Schafer; sons, Chris and wife, Nikki, and Jeff and wife, Victoria; grandsons, Holden and Keegan; brother, Paul Rummerfield and spouse, Melanie; sister, Marybeth Roscoe, and spouse, John; sister, Evelyn Rummerfield; brother, Robert Rummerfield and spouse, Enrique Graf; nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends who will miss Susanne deeply.

Susanne was predeceased in death by her father-in-law, Paul Christian Schafer, mother-in-law, Pauline Marie Schafer, and sister-in-law, Carol Ann Schafer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation, 1310 South Tryon Street, Suite 105, Charlotte, NC 28203. www.jeffgordonchildrensfoundation.org

Saints of God, come to her aid!
Come to meet her, angels of the Lord!
Receive her soul and present her to God the Most High.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her and may the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
