Dear Dene, I was deeply saddened by Bob’s passing. He was my inspiration, my mentor, and a great support in many ways.

Upon encouragement and arrangement of my thesis advisor at Purdue University, I first met Bob about forty years ago when I was a young graduate student visiting him at NBS to pick his brain in preparation for my PhD research. I was in awe walking into his office full of books and papers everywhere and a wall full of awards and recognitions. But, most importantly I was in awe by his brilliance, depth of knowledge, and his enthusiasm to spend time with me more than two hours discussing and criticizing my ideas. I didn’t know at the time that this meeting was the most important meeting in my career. I joined his team a year later and spent my whole career at NIST trying to follow his footsteps.

I have many fond memories of our trips together, especially annual Sarasota trips for the machine tool standards committee meetings, where Dene used to join us for dinner and drinks and lots of fun with Bob’s colorful stories after long daily meetings. I will miss him dearly and cherish the fact that I am one of his students even before he became a professor.

Dear family,

I appreciate having the opportunity to observe the memorial in Concord (via zoom) this afternoon. I learned about it in the Frederick News Post obituary - June 4.

I knew Dr. Hocken as Bob Hocken at NIST in the 1980's. A dynamic fellow, a strong presence while crossing paths in the hallway, visiting him in his office, etc. He was not my boss, but a good friend of my boss at NIST (Dr. Eitzen). One particular memory I have is visiting Bob in his office (with a couple others) to discuss a project of mutual interest - probably connected to the AMRF. I was a little tense to present my case, but was quite taken aback by his demeanor: he was laid back in his office chair, feet up on the desk, and light heartedly discussing (what I thought were significant) technical matters. In addition, I could not help but notice his office walls covered with plaques recognizing numerous accomplishments and awards.
It was neat!

Dr Hocken was a brilliant teacher and It a was a honor and privilege to be his student. I had the opportunity to spend many hours with him during the course of my study at UNCC and I will cherish those memories. He made it possible for me to come to this country in 1991 and I am thankful for his support and guidance. May his soul Rest In Peace. My heartfelt sympathies to his family.
